The North seemed like a place of keen opportunity for the new Negro a place where the freed slaves and their posterity could be free to express their exceptional talents (Harlem conversion: glacial Period in the Development of Afro-American Culture). The 1920s in New York City, Harlem, was a time exploding with African American artistry, political energy and racial pride. It was a time when African Americans denotative themselves through their lyrics. They wrote songs, plays and literature about the life of Negroes. It was the time of the Harlem reincarnation. The Harlem Renaissance was also known as the Negro Movement (Harlem Renaissance: polar Period in the Development of Afro-American Culture). The Harlem Renaissance showed that African Americans made spectacular achievements. The Harlem renaissance refers to the flowering of African American cultural and intellectual life during the 1920s. The movement wedged urban centers throughout the United States. It was a time when dumb and white Americans alike discovered the vibrancy and uniqueness of unappeasable art, music, and especially, literature.

This was the beginning of the jazz age with famous musicians like Duke Ellington. The cristal was marked by exciting nightlife in Harlems cabarets, particularly the Cotton Club; by the publishing of a abundant number of novels, short stories, plays, poems, and articles about and by blacks; by great musicals written by and starring blacks, most importantly the legendary Shuffle Along the first of a popular serial of musicals featuring all African-American casts; and by the production of artwork by talented young artists like Aaron Douglas and Richmond Barthe.
