John Bell Hood

John Bell was born in Owingsville, Ky. During his youth, his father was gone almost eight months out of the year instruction medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. During this time, John Bells masculine influences were his paternal grandfather, Luke Hood, who had fought against the Indians and his maternal grandfather, James, who was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Hood was not an outstanding scholar and struggled academically. He graduated totally forty-fourth in a class of 55. Hood also managed to undertake into trouble a bit at West Point. besides all this changed in 1852 when General Robert E. Lee took over as superintendent of the academy. After being found missing, Hood was demoted and was only 4 demerits short of expulsion. This was how eer, the last time Hood was ever disciplined.




In August 1853 Hood was a 2nd deputy sheriff and went to the Fourth Infantry Regiment in San Francisco. In shew 1855, U.S. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis and his congress passed legislation that authorized devil new Calvary regiments in Texas. These units were elite and led by Col. Albert Sydney Johnston and Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee. Hood was promoted to 2nd LT of the Calvary and was assigned to COL Johnston. He was stationed at Camp Mason, TX but was forced to return dwelling house shortly thereafter when his father had a debilitating stroke. Hoods father left him in charge of the Hood estate and John Bell stayed as long as he could. He returned back to Texas in December 1856.
