In a small and remote village of southmost Africa called Ndotsheni full of lifes Reverend Stephen Kumalo. Kumalo is summoned to the city of Johannesburg by Msimangu, a priest, who informs him that his sister Gertrude is ill. mend in Johannesburg Kumalo hopes to find his son, Absalom and he enlists the help of Msimangu as tumesce as his own brother, John. In the process of searching for Absalom, Kumalo finds that at that place are deep political and economic motivations that are weighed down to tear South Africa apart. Kumalo arranges for Absalom and his girlfriend to marry forwards he is executed so she can accrue to Ndotsheni with Kumalo and live as hi daughter-inlaw. Just before they are to return to the village, Kumalo realizes Gertrude has disappeared, and his family bonds seem to be breaking before his eyes. Kumalo is troubled by the state of his village and his once strong tribe, and so is James Jarvis who does what he can to help Kumalo restore the bonds of his village, including building a new church.
