Mobile Learning in Higher Learning Institutions: a Case of Strathmore University - Abstract Paper

Abstract
The uptake of liquid technologies in developing countries in Africa has escalated since 2010. lively technologies continue to improve and provide solutions that transform the industries and society in sub-Saharan Africa, including higher education. This paper reports findings of a survey through with(p) in Strathmore University and that investigated the viability of winding devices towards supporting and enhancing delivery of education in higher learning institutions. The research objectives were to identify suitable nomadic reader applications, document formats and document conversion jibes; investigate students zeal for mobile learning based on perception and adept preparedness and tested a practical implementation of mobile learning. This research was funded by Kenya Education Network (KENET).

Several mLearning tools were selected including; mobile readers (FBReaderJ, MobiPocket and Albite Reader-2.0), document formats (EPUB, MOBI and iSilo) and a document conversion tool (Calibre). A sample of 531 students filled questionnaires and 118 experimented with mLearning resources, 20 were interviewed in cogitate groups to capture qualitative feedback on user experience.

The findings revealed that 94% of the students shake up Internet enabled phones, 32% have either Android or Blackberry Smartphones, 20% have Symbian Smartphones and 47% have coffee berry/feature phones. 95% would potentially use mLearning as a complementary study method. The students preferred using navigation hyperlinks to cast through the content. Through mlearning the students were able to access notes from anywhere at anytime, including in traffic. The perception of students towards mLearning showed was found to be positive, the degree of technological preparedness among the students was relatively high. The practical implementation of mLearning yielded positive results.
